Sensational sunflowers

If a sunflower puts a smile on your face, how much happiness is contained in an entire field of yellow beauties? Quite a lot as it turns out.

The Mangamarie Sunflower Field, established by farmer, photographer and mum, turned sunflower entrepreneur extraordinaire, Abbe Hore, is turning heads for all the right reasons.

Abbe hit on the idea of planting a sunflower field on their farm, just south of Pahiatua, initially as a way to mitigate a threat to their farming business. With the farm on either side of a busy road, which she regularly needs to move stock across, the sunflowers seemed a novel way to slow traffic.

She had no idea it would bloom into such a raging success, and provide a dreamy backdrop to photo sessions for her photography business Photos For Jean, as well as diversifying their farm income.

Planting a cut variety – sowing every one of the 4700 sunflowers herself – means she is able to sell cut flowers too.

The perfect family outing, or setting for that insta-worthy shot, the sunflower field is a must visit for anyone travelling on State Highway 2, just a short detour off the main road.
