A BIT ABOUT ME
I'm a journalist. Horses and farming are my most favourite things in life to write and talk about.
My name is Rebecca Greaves and I live on our hill country sheep and beef farm near Pongaroa, with my husband Richard and our daughter Phoebe.
I’m a writer, mum, avid amateur equestrian sport competitor, and chief gate opener, sheep chaser and admin lady on the farm.
I studied towards a Bachelor of Art at Canterbury University before completing the Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism, also at Canterbury.
I started out in daily news, writing for Hawke’s Bay Today and the Waikato Times, before specialising in agriculture and eventually becoming editor of The New Zealand Farmers Weekly, as well as doing a stint in the press gallery in Parliament. I started my own business when I met my husband and moved to the farm - lucky a landline, internet and laptop are all I need to work from a remote farm!
In 2015 I authored the books ‘Hawke’s Bay Hunt 1990-2015’ and ‘Tangihau’.
Horses have always been my greatest love and hobby (some might say obsession) and although my parents hoped I’d grow out of it, they’re still waiting. I jumped at the opportunity to start writing about the equestrian competition circuit in New Zealand and am a contributor to Show Circuit magazine. I might not be good enough to make a living riding horses, but being paid to talk to people about them is definitely the next best thing!
I also work with a small, select group of businesses I love, and whose values align with mine, on their marketing projects. From writing press releases or advertorial, to providing copy for new websites or proofing text, I can do it.
More recently I have ventured into the world of broadcasting and am host of the Young Country Down to Earth podcast, celebrating innovation in agricultural businesses. I previously co-hosted Rural Exchange (REX) alongside Hamish McKay. My most recent and current role is as Editor of Country-Wide magazine and host of The Country-Wide podcast.
